Thomas "Richard" Parnell, 72, husband of Jeanette Hudson Parnell, died Monday, December 28, 2009 at his home.

Born in Sumter County, he was a son of the late Gettice Laverne Parnell and the late Francis Inez Huggins Parnell. Mr. Parnell was a member of First Baptist Church in Bishopville. He retired from Sunoco Product Company and was a member of the Bishopville Fire Department, Woodmen of the World, and the VFW.

Survivors besides his wife include a son, Rick Parnell (Patti) of Lydia; a daughter, Sissy Parnell Watts of Bishopville; five grandchildren, Casie Yarbrough, Chandler Shirley, Bailee Watts, Ivy Watts, and Sarah Hayden Watts; three sisters, Wilma Saverence of Bishopville, Jackie Powell (Roy) of Sumter, and Linda Windham (Shot) of Lamar, a brother, Hamer Parnell (Ann) of Lamar; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Ann Watford and Carolyn Rabon.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Hancock-Elmore-Hill Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Tom Rutan officiating. Burial will be in the Piedmont Cemetery.

Honorary pallbearers will be Members of the Bishopville Fire Department and VFW.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Hancock-Elmore-Hill Funeral Home and other times at the home.

Memorials may be made to a charity of ones choice.

Peggy Mozingo King - Wednesday, December 21, 2009

 Funeral services for Peggy Mozingo King, 78, will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, December 23, 2009 at Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church.

The Rev. Barbee Parsons and the Rev. Ryan Riley will officiate with burial in the church Cemetery directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home.

The family will receive friends Tuesday, December 22, 2009 from 5-7 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church, Box 56, Lydia, SC 29079.

Mrs. King died Monday, December 21, 2009. Born in Darlington County, SC, she was a daughter of the late Johnnie and Lois Campbell Mozingo. She was a member of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church. She was a loving wife, devoted mother and an excellent cook.

Surviving are her husband, Johnnie King of Lydia, SC; son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Terry and Wanda King of Bishopville, SC; daughter, Jean King of Florence, SC; sister, Barbara Galloway of Hartsville, SC; brother, J. E. Mozingo of Oates, SC; grandchildren, Emily King Watts, Gilliam King, Zach King.

The family would like to thank her caregivers, Geraldine Barefoot, Lou Adams, and Sheila Stalheim.

Funeral services for Maude Blackwell Kelley, age 68, who passed away December 14, will be held Wednesday at 3:00 pm at St. Matthew United Methodist Church. Burial will be in the St. Matthew Cemetery directed by Norton Funeral Home. Visitation will be Tuesday 6-8 pm at the Funeral Home.

Mrs. Kelley was born in Darlington County a daughter of the late Horace & Christine Hall Blackwell. She was a member of St. Matthew United Methodist Church and  the St. Matthew UMW.

Surviving are her husband, Robert B. Kelley, Sr., Bishopville, Daughter, Teresa Kelley, Bishopville, 2 sons, Bob (Jill) Kelley, Bishopville, Wayne (Lisa) Kelley, Lugoff, 4 Grandchildren, Matt, Rolanda, Ryan & Tyner Kelley, 2 adopted Grandchildren, Rachael & Katie Kelley, 2 Sisters: Ruth Gainey, Hartsville, Taphina Nobles, Bishopville, 2 Brothers, George & Carl Blackwell, Hartsville.

Funeral services for Margaret Irene Keister, age 58, who passed away December 14, 2009 will be held Thursday at 3:00 pm at Bethlehem Cemetery directed by Norton Funeral Home.

Mrs. Keister was born in Sumter a daughter of the late Raymond L. Strickland, Jr. and Blanche Strickland. Surviving are her husband Tommy Watson, Bishopville, 2 Daughters: Sandy (Eric) Schultz, Lesley Keister (Michael) Jeffords,  1 Son, Jeffrey Scott Lynch, 2 Grandchildren, Taylor Ann & Harley Chasse Schultz, all of Darlington, 2 sisters, Beth Strickland, Bishopville, Mary Tennant, Sumter, 1 Brother, Jim Strickland, Spartanburg. 



Anne Dampier Stewart - December 12, 2009

LAMAR, SC


Anne Dampier Stewart, age 63, of Lamar died Saturday, December 12, 2009 at her residence. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM on Monday, December 14, at Mt. Elon Baptist Church, with burial following in the church cemetery, directed by Belk Funeral Home, Lamar. 


Born June 4, 1946, and a lifelong resident of Lee County, Anne is the daughter of the late G.B. and Margie Outlaw Dampier. She graduated from Bishopville High School and Carolina College of Commerce. 


Anne formerly worked for the Lee County Alcohol and Drug Commission. She was a member of Mt. Elon Baptist church, and enjoyed going to services there. Mrs. Stewart also loved her grandchildren and enjoyed tending to her chickens and cows.


Surviving are her husband, Bobby Stewart, a son, Grier (Elizabeth) C. Copeland of Kingstree, a daughter, Candyce (Scott) Chapman of Bishopville, four grandchildren: Grayson, Carter and Peyton Copeland and Dylan Chapman.

James "Kenny" Lucas - December 12, 2009

 Funeral services for James (Kenny) Lucas who passed away Saturday, December. 12, 2009, after a courageous battle with cancer, will be held Monday December 14, 2009 at 3:00 pm in the Chapel of Norton Funeral Home in Bishopville. Burial will be in the Turkey Creek Cemetery.

The family will receive visitors from 3-5 pm on Sunday, December 13th at Norton Funeral Home and at other times at the home, 2265 Bethune Highway, Bishopville.

Kenny was born November 7, 1943 a son of the late J. Ben Lucas & Vertie Stokes Lucas. He retired in 2008 as a Department Head with Santee Print in Sumter, after a twenty-eight year career as a Department Head with Reeves Brothers in Bishopville.

Kenny was a member of St. Matthews United Methodist Church and will be remembered for his strong sense of humility and willingness to help his fellowman.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Jean Kelley Lucas, two sons, Keith & Kelley Lucas, Bishopville, one brother, Doug (Kathy ) Lucas, Bishopville and a special cousin Jimmy (Grace) Polk, Bishopville.

He was predeceased by one sister, Mary Lucas Gardner.

Stanford Farmer - Thursday, December 10, 2009

Stanford Farmer, 88, beloved husband of the late Minnie A. Smith Farmer, died Thursday, December 10, 2009 in Bishopville.

Born in Winnsboro, SC and a long time resident of the Cedar Creek Community, Mr. Farmer was a son of the late William Frank Farmer and the late Elizabeth Farmer. Mr Farmer was a member of Cedar Creek Baptist Church where he served faithfully as a deacon for 58 years. He also served as Sunday school teacher and choir member for over 60 years. Mr. Farmer loved music and was the last remaining member of the original Cedar Creek Quartet. He retired from Reeves Brothers, Inc. and was a World War II veteran. He also served as a chaplain of the local VFW.

Survivors include four children, Wayne J. Farmer, Linda F. Gainey (Major), Catherine F. Harris (Wayne), and S. Warren Farmer (Kay); nine grandchildren; and eleven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, Wendell Farmer; two brothers, Carrol Farmer and the Rev. Ellie Farmer; and a sister, Willie Rose Brown.

Funeral services will be held a 2 p.m. Sunday at Cedar Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. B.R. Wallace officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Andrew W. Harris, Donald J. Harris, Mark D. Hopkins, Scotty M. Hopkins, Earl O. Gainey, and Adam Whiteside.

Honorary pallbearers will be Deacons of the Cedar Creek Baptist Church.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday at Hancock-Elmore-Hill Funeral Home and at other times at 741 Gum Springs Road, Bishopville.

Edith A. "Bunny" Mathis, 84, widow of Marion E. Mathis, died Thursday, December 10, 2009 at her home.

Born in Bishopville, SC, she was a daughter of the late Henry G. Asbill and the late Dolly Duke Asbill. Mrs Mathis was a member of Spring Valley Baptist Church in Columbia where she was a member of the Adult Ladies Sunday School Class. She was a retired nurse from Lee County Memorial Hospital.

Survivors include a son, Gene Mathis (Kathy) of Columbia; four grandchildren, Adam Taylor Mathis, Jordan Cole Mathis, and Charla Price, all of Columbia, and Jason "Busch" Malloch of Spartanburg; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday in the Hancock-Elmore-Hill Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Robert Winburn and the Rev. John Platt officiating. Burial will be in the Bishopville Presbyterian Church Cemetery.

James Ray "Jimmy" Smith, Sr., husband of Mary Ruth Smith, died Friday, December 4, 2009 at his home.

Born in Lee County he was a son of L.W. Smith, Jr. and the late Ruby Segars Smith. Mr Smith was a member of Memorial Chapel Church and was a retired truck driver and owner of Jimmy Smith and Sons Garage.

Survivors include his wife and father of Bishopville; three children, Jimmy Smith, Jr., Billy Smith (Shelia) and Tammie Lanford (Mark); three grandchildren, Laci Tobens (Craig), B.J. Smith, and Blake Lanford; three brothers, Bryan Smith, Mike Smith, Glenn Smith (Teressa); two sisters, Elinor Holloman (Glen) of Florence and Judy McLeod (Eldrige); and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Monday at Memorial Chapel Church with the Rev. Jim Peterson
officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
