BISHOPVILLE - Beulah Helen Snyder Nash, 99, of Bishopville, died Thursday, April 12, 2012, in Myrtle Beach after a short illness.
Born December 3, 1912, in Union County, NC, she was a daughter of the late Solomon Franklin Snyder and the late Mary Parker Snyder. She was married December 3, 1938, to the late Kemp Charles Nash. She was educated in the Union County, NC, schools and Wingate College. She had been an active member of First Baptist Church in Bishopville since 1938 and served as the superintendent of the Junior Department for 25 years. She was employed by Dr. Herman Denny for 25 years.
Survivors include three children, Kemp Charles "Swami" Nash Jr. (Nina) of Myrtle Beach, Martha Nash Gooding (Grant) of Diamond Head, MS, and Ralph Franklin Nash of Myrtle Beach; grandchildren, Kemp C. Nash III (Tonya) of Little River, Kyle C. Nash of Myrtle Beach, Helen Gooding Leupold (Christopher) of Gibsonville, NC, and Caroline Gooding Pendergast of Mandeville, LA; great-grandchildren, Brooke, Claire and Katie Pendergast, Madeline, Mary and Joseph Leupold, and Haley and Noah Nash.
She was preceded in death by four brothers, two sisters, and a grandson, Michael B. Nash.
Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church, Bishopville, with the Rev. Sam Stevens officiating. Burial will be in Piedmont Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday in the church fellowship hall.

Eleida Mae Nexsen Burrows 
SUMTER - Eleida Mae "Doll" Nexsen Burrows, 83, wife of Frank C. "F.C." Burrows, died Friday, April 6, 2012, in the Medical University of South Carolina.
Born March 14, 1929, in Cades, SC, she was a daughter of the late Eleida Parrott Nexsen and Leland Ivey Nexsen. She was one of 13 children.
Mrs. Burrows was a member of New Salem Baptist Church for more than 60 years. She was a graduate of the University of South Carolina-School of Nursing and had retired as a child health nurse from the Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC). She recently received her 50-year pin for membership in the Order of the Eastern Star (OES) where she served as Worthy Matron and Esther.
She was a loving wife to F.C. for more than 63 years. She demonstrated her Christianity through her dedication to her husband, children, family, neighbors, and friends; teaching of Sunday school; visits to the sick and shut-in; nursing career; and service to the OES. Her kindness, gentleness and love for others will live on in those who were blessed to know her.
Mrs. Burrows is survived by her husband; two sons, Mike Burrows, Wayne (Barbara) Burrows, and one daughter, Cheryl Burrows Davids, all of Sumter; five grandchildren, Robert (Brandi) Burrows, Rebecca (Bubba Preast) Burrows, Clint (Erin) Burrows, Bridgett Burrows and Alivia Burrows Davids; seven great-grandchildren, Madison, Michael, Baylor, Brogan, Rhett, Abigail and Brooke; three sisters, Alma Nexsen, Mary Sue (Mike) Hewitt and Betty Lou Culick; three brothers, Paul (Diane) Nexsen, Billy (Wanda) Nexsen, and Junior (Lizzie) Nexsen; three sisters-in-law, Iva Lee (Jack) Whitcomb, Argie Hudson, Vernell (Harold) James; one brother-in-law, Dargen Burrows; and a host of nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a daughter in-law, Roberta Mims Burrows; four brothers, Vardell, Sam, Leland and James Nexsen; and two sisters, Lucille Nexsen Disher and Margaret Nexsen Disher.
Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 11, 2012, at Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Sim Smith officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Park.
Pallbearers will be Clint Burrows, Robert Burrows, Tony Culick, Elias Preast, Sid Singleton, William Singleton Jr., Marty Trickett and Dave Watt.
The family will receive friends Tuesday, April 10, 2012, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home and other times at the home.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to New Salem Baptist Church, 2500 W. Oakland Avenue, Sumter, SC 29154, the American Heart Association , the American Kidney Foundation, Christian Family Services Adoption Agency, or to a charity of one's choice .

Winston Haley Jewell Sr. - Saturday, March 24, 2012


Winston Haley Jewell Sr., age 65, died on Saturday, March 24, 2012, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

 Born on Oct. 28, 1946, in Ft. Fairfield, Maine, he was a son of the late Omar Jewell and Irene Westbrook. He played baseball for the P-15's from 1964 to 1965 and was a vocalist for the Jackstones in 1965. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He loved music, sports and people. He will be remembered as a loving father, brother, grandfather and friend. He was a devoted member of The Kingdom Hall of Jehovah Witnesses.

Surviving are three sons, Winston H. Jewell Jr. and his wife, Phyllis, and Cayce B. Jewell, all of Sumter, and Andrew "AJ" Jewell of Rock Hill; two daughters, Angie Jewell Morningstar of Sumter and Felicia Jewell McClellan and her husband, Tom, of Clover; a brother, Owen Jewell; a sister, Kandy Stamps and her husband, David, of Charleston; six grandchildren, Winston "Haley" Jewell III, Marcus Morningstar, Kody Morningstar, Jackie Morningstar, Jakob Fricke and Michael McClellan; his former wife; Sandra Jewell Fender; one niece, Brianna Stamps; and two nephews, Daniel Stamps and Braden Lantowski.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Scott Lantowski and Robin Lantowski; and a great-granddaughter, Devyn Jewell.
A remembrance service will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday in the Bullock Funeral Home Chapel.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service on Thursday from 5 to 6 p.m. at Bullock Funeral Home and other times at the home of Angie Morningstar, 1500 Pinewood Road, Sumter, SC 29150.

James “Big Jim” Karvelas - March 18, 2012

James “Big Jim” Karvelas, age 84, beloved husband of Grace Pitts Karvelas, died on Sunday, March 18, 2012 at his residence.

He was a son of the late John Karvelas and the late Aphrodite Karkania Karvelas, each of whom came from Greece. He attended the public schools of Jersey City, NJ and later attended the University of South Carolina when his family moved to Sumter for business reasons in June, 1944. He served with distinction in the Army Air Corp during World War II and later became the owner and operator of Big Jim’s restaurant for over 63 years. He was a 67- year continuous member of the Gamecock Club and lived to see Carolina football go 11-2. He was an active member of the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church of Columbia since 1947 and was a past President of the Parish council.

No one lived larger, joked harder, loved deeper, and cared more than Big Jim. We will miss his wit and his heart, and his telling us how to do it better.

Surviving in addition to his wife are: A son, John Karvelas and his wife Donna of Spartanburg; two daughters, Alexandra Huggins and her husband George of Cary, NC and Aphrodite Konduros and her husband Sam of Greenville; a niece Eve Stegner of Sumter; a nephew, Michael Poulos and his wife Julie of Asheville, NC; a stepson, Jeremy Pitts and his wife Anna of Sumter; a stepdaughter, Ali Rogers and her husband Jason of Sumter; Step-Grandchildren, Sydney Grace Rogers, Elizabeth Pitts “Liza” Rogers and Jackson Haynsworth Pitts.

Preceded in death by: his first wife, Christina Stathopoulos Karvelas, stepson Ryan Jackson Pitts; a sister, Elizabeth Poulos; and a brother Michael Karvelas.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, March 22, 2012 at 11:00am at the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church with the Rev. Father Michael Platanis officiating. Burial will be held at 4:00pm in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be: Dan Lyles, Leigh Leventis, Sean Mitchell, John Psomas, George Nickas, Angelo Trifos, Phillip Jackson, Peter Diamaduros, Peter Currence, Likie Beleos and Mitchell Dargan.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, March 21, 2012 from 6-8pm with a Trisagion service at 7:30pm at Bullock Funeral Home.

Dr. Reid Terrill Johnson - March 4, 2012

PAWLEYS ISLAND - Dr. Reid Terrill Johnson, 67, passed away Sunday, March 2012, at his residence.
Dr. Johnson was born in Durham, N.C.. October 9, 1944, a son of the late Vernon Johnson and Louise Barbee Johnson. He graduated from Lee Edward High School in Asheville, N.C., and received his B.S. in mathematics at the University of N.C. at Asheville and his doctorate in the School of Psychology from the University of S.C. Prior to moving to Pawleys Island, Dr. Johnson was a psychology professor at Winthrop University for 25 years. He was instrumental in developing and implementing the School of Psychology graduate program and continued to be an advocate for children with special needs. In his retirement, Dr. Johnson enjoyed golfing, writing, and teaching short courses for Coastal Carolina University.
Surviving are: his wife of 25 years, Nancy Myers Stuckey Johnson of Pawleys Island; a son, Christopher Reid Johnson (Elizabeth) of Las Vegas, Nev.; a daughter, Kimberly Laura Johnson Counts of Charlotte, N.C.; and five grandchildren.
A private memorial service will be held at three o'clock on Sunday afternoon, March 11, 2012, at Myrtle Beach State Park.

BISHOPVILLE - Estelle Ethel Shimel Traub, 93, wife of 61 years to the late Irven Philip Traub, died Monday, March 5, 2012, in Roper Hospital in Charleston.
Born in Charleston, she was a daughter of the late Louis M. Shimel and the late Lillian Fechter Shimel. She grew up in Charleston and attended the College of Charleston. After her marriage, she made her home in Bishopville where she raised three wonderful sons and was an active part of the community throughout her life. Mrs. Traub was a member of Temple Sinai in Sumter. She was a loving, devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, and was cherished by all of her friends.
Survivors include three sons, Kenneth Traub and Richard "Rick" Traub, both of Atlanta, GA, and Douglas Traub of Bishopville; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a sister, Renée Frisch of Charleston.
She was preceded in death by a son, Lowell Shimel Traub; and two sisters.
A graveside service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday in Sumter Jewish Cemetery with Rabbi Robert Seigel, D.D., officiating.
The family will receive friends following the service at the graveside.
