Dr. Johnson was born in Durham, N.C.. October 9, 1944, a son of the late Vernon Johnson and Louise Barbee Johnson. He graduated from Lee Edward High School in Asheville, N.C., and received his B.S. in mathematics at the University of N.C. at Asheville and his doctorate in the School of Psychology from the University of S.C. Prior to moving to Pawleys Island, Dr. Johnson was a psychology professor at Winthrop University for 25 years. He was instrumental in developing and implementing the School of Psychology graduate program and continued to be an advocate for children with special needs. In his retirement, Dr. Johnson enjoyed golfing, writing, and teaching short courses for Coastal Carolina University.
Surviving are: his wife of 25 years, Nancy Myers Stuckey Johnson of Pawleys Island; a son, Christopher Reid Johnson (Elizabeth) of Las Vegas, Nev.; a daughter, Kimberly Laura Johnson Counts of Charlotte, N.C.; and five grandchildren.
A private memorial service will be held at three o'clock on Sunday afternoon, March 11, 2012, at Myrtle Beach State Park.
