FEBRUARY 27, 1926 – MAY 26, 2019
Lena Oree Baker Wilson, of Mint Hill, North Carolina, passed away peacefully Sunday evening, May 26, 2019. She was 93 years old.
Born February 27, 1926, in Lee County, South Carolina, Lena was one of seven children born to Lemuel and Lena Baker. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Everett Wilson; son, Larry Wilson; and siblings, Margaret Taylor, Vivian Farmer and James Baker.
Lena was a 1942 graduate of Ashwood High School in Bishopville, South Carolina, and was employed by the Port of Embarkation Navy Yard in Charleston, South Carolina. She was a self-taught artist and won many awards with the Charlotte Art Society. She was also a talented musician and played many instruments such as the piano, fiddle, violin, harmonica, Hawaiian guitar, mandolin. She was a piano tuner and taught many of her family and friends to play the piano. Lena was a Seamstress; she upholstered furniture, made draperies and sewed all of her children's clothing. A devout Christian, Lena and her husband held a non-denominational church in their home for many years.
Lena was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend, and her legacy will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.
She is survived by her three children, Donna Askew and husband, Ron, Michael Wilson, and Lana Boone and husband, John, all of Mint Hill, North Carolina; grandchildren, Kimberly, Tammy, Krystle and Leah; great-grandchildren, Tyler, Haleigh, Madison, Christian, Wyatt, and Sabrina. Also surviving are her siblings, Joyce Clarkson, Archie Baker and Gilbert Baker; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family from 3:00 until 4:00 pm Saturday, June 1, 2019, at McEwen Funeral Service-Mint Hill Chapel, 7428 Matthews-Mint Hill Road in Mint Hill, with a funeral service to follow at 4:00 in the funeral chapel. Officiating ministers are Jim Holt, Ken Pinney, Waverley Pierson and Suzanne McCorkell. Interment will follow in Sunset Memory Gardens.
Family and friends are invited to a meal following the service at Ron and Donna’s home.
