Bridget J. "Bridie" Schaffer, 92, widow of Rawland T. Schaffer, died on Tuesday, June 10, 2014, at her
home.
Born on Oct. 9, 1921, in Dublin, Ireland, she was a daughter of the late Nicholas and Mary Hughes
Freeman. She retired from Campbell Soup Co. and the Sumter Police Department after serving more
than 20 years as a crossing guard. She was a member of St. Jude Catholic Church.
Survivors include four children, Ruth Spradlin of Columbia, and Mary Aquilar, Tony Ellis (Wanda) and
Pat Hill (Charles), all of Sumter; a special friend, Virginia Ruis; two sisters, Madge Burke of Ireland
and Carmel Whitson of New York; a brother, Tony Freeman of New York; eight grandchildren; eight
great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Mae Doyle; and three brothers, Tommy Freeman, Johnny
Freeman and Richard Freeman.
A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday at Evergreen Memorial Park cemetery with the
Rev. Charles Donovan, C.Ss.R. officiating.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and
other times at the home.

29151 or to Tuomey Hospice, 500 Pinewood Road, Suite 2, Sumter, SC 29154.
