Frances "Scoozie" McLeod Jones, 68, wife of Marion Jones, died Sunday, April 11, 2010, at her home, after an extended illness.







Born in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late James F. and Bettie Rowland McLeod. Mrs. Jones was a member of Bethlehem United Methodist Church and was a nurse with the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control.
Survivors besides her husband include three sons, Ingram Welch (Lori) of Elgin, McLeod Welch (Glenda) of Sumter and Steven Jones (Lisa) of California; and nine grandchildren, Staci Welch, Tee Welch, Katheryn Welch, Matthew Welch, Cassidy Welch, Shon Jones, Sheldon Jones, Spencer Jones and Mitchell Jones.
She was preceded in death by a brother, James McLeod.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Bethlehem United Methodist Church with the Rev. Paul Rogers officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Hancock-Elmore-Hill Funeral Home and other times at the home.

Ms. Carole Carnes Baker

Ms. Carole Carnes Baker, 63, formerly of Bishopville, S.C., passed away Thursday, April 8, 2010, at the Wayne T. Patrick Hospice House.

A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m., Saturday, April 10, at the Bethlehem United Methodist Church Cemetery, Pinchum Sly Rd., Bishopville, with the Rev. Toni White officiating.

Ms. Baker was born in Bishopville, and was the daughter of the late William Eugene Carnes and the late Martha White Carnes. She was a member of Bethlehem United Methodist Church and was a legal assistant with CITI Financial Services.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Baker was preceded in death by her son, Sam Baker Jr.
Ms. Baker is survived by her daughter, Michelle Carter and her husband, Tommy of Rock Hill, SC; her brothers, Wayne Carnes of Sunnyvale, Texas and Tony Carnes of Hartsville, S.C.; her three grandchildren, Jenna, Whitney, and Anna Caroline; and her one great-grandchild.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 7:30 p.m., Friday, April 9, at Greene Funeral Home Northwest Chapel, 2133 Ebenezer Road, Rock Hill, and following the graveside service in Bishopville at the home of Olin and Shirley Price, 714 Pearl Street.

Funeral services for Johnny (Johnny Boy) Kiser, age 70, who passed away April 7, will be held Sat. at 4:00 pm at Lucknow Baptist Church. Rev. Howard Brown and Rev. Mendell Morrison, Jr. will officiate. 

Burial will be in the Lucknow Baptist Church Cemetery directed by Norton Funeral Home, Bishopville Chapel. Visitation will be Friday 5-7 pm at the residence 69 Stokes Bridge Road, West, Bishopville. 

Johnny Boy was born in Kershaw County a son of the late Brantley E. & Carrie Hornsby Kiser. He was an avid fisherman, loved farming and anything outdoors. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He attended Lucknow Baptist Church. 

Surviving are his wife, Donnie Lee Gainey Kiser, Bishopville, 2 sons, Tommy (Gwen) Kiser, Bishopville, Chan Hall, Atlanta, GA, 2 daughters, Della (W.J.) Clark, Chester, Charlene Kiser (Anette) Johnson, McBee, 3 Sisters, Lillie Mae Hopkins, Darlington, Carolyn Collins, Sharon Thomas, Bethune, 5 grandchildren, Rebecca, Leslie, Blake, Leann, Emma, 1 great grandchild, Phillip. Alice Joyce Hudson Hudson

Alice Joyce Hudson Hudson, widow of Charlie Edward Hudson, died Wednesday, March 31, 2010 at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center in Hartsville.

Born in Lamar, she was a daughter of the late Horace Hudson and the late Mamie Hendrix Hudson. Mrs. Hudson was a member of Bethlehem United Methodist Church. She was retired from Ginsberg's Ladies Apparel.

Survivors include two daughters, Charleen Privette (Chris) and Mary Alice "Clyde" McGuirt (John "Scooter"), both of Bishopville; a son, Chuck Hudson (Susan) of Hartsville; six grandchildren, Adam Privette (Shannon), Britton Privette, Cole Hudson, Abby Hudson, Jenna McGuirt, and John McGuirt; three great-grandchildren, Cary Privette, Grey Privette, and Reiko McGuirt; two sisters, Jeanette Parnell and Virginia Hudson; and special friends, Melba Shuford and Ali Davis. 

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Alfred Hudson and Carroll Hudson; two sisters, Grace McGee and Mary Langston; and a brother-in-law, Richard Parnell.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Bethlehem United Methodist Church in Bishopville with the Rev. Paul Rogers officiating. Burial will be in the Piedmont Cemetery. 

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Hancock-Elmore-Hill Funeral Home and other times at the home.

Funeral services for Leon Wallace “Brother” Privette, Jr. 72 will be held at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, March 28, 2010 at Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church. The Rev. Barbee Parsons will officiate with burial in the church cemetery.

BERNICE M. REAMES

Following a brief period of illness, life’s wonderful voyage came to an end for Mrs. Bernice Monroe Reames on Saturday, March 20, 2010 at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center in Hartsville, S.C.

Mrs. Bernice Monroe Reames was born October 16, 1928 to the late Jackson and Elizabeth Monroe.  She attended the public schools of Lee County and was a life long member of New Zion A.M.E. Church.  She served faithfully with the Missionaries and Stewardesses of the church. 

She retired from the Kendall Company in Bethune, S.C. after many years of employment; however, retirement did not agree with her and she worked several additional years with the Gibbs Activity Center in Bishopville, SC. 

Bernice married the late Toney Reames, Sr. To this union nine children were born.  Three children preceded her in death, Dorothy Johnson, Odell Reames, and Parnell Reames.  She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Golden Monroe and Wilfred Monroe (Ethel), and two sisters, Pelzer McDonald and Nicola Harriott.

She leaves to cherish loving memories:  six children, Eddie L. Reames (Vanessa) of Phoenix, AZ, Delores Murry (Fred) of Oakley, CA, Geraldine Pressley (Prince) of Lynchburg, SC, Toney Reames, Jr. (Linda), Jeanette Charles (Wilbur), and Virginia Reames all of Bishopville, S.C.;  one sister, Irene Frierson (Jessie) of Columbia, SC; one brother Jessie Monroe (Janie) of Brooklyn, NY; one aunt, Carolyn Brown of Richmond, VA; 23 grandchildren; 23 great grandchildren; 3 brothers-in law; 3 sisters-in law; a host nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

 A homegoing celebration was held on March 24, 2010 at New Zion A. M. E. Church in Bishopville, SC.

Ila Mae Smith Moore, 90, widow of Frealin Moore, died Friday, March 19, 2010 at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in Lee County, she was a daughter of the late Harvey Smith and the late Nell Caughman Smith. Mrs. Moore was a member of St. John United Methodist Church in the Springhill Community and retired from Bishopville Manufacturing. 

Survivors include two daughters, Harriet Wilfong (Richard) of Sumter, and Freida McLeod (Olin) of Dalzell; one sister, Mamie Hancock of the Springhill Community; three grandchildren, Renee Pippin, Jeff Wilfong, and Angie Melvin: and six great-grandchildren.

A brother, Luther Smith, and a sister, Annie Lou Bradshaw, preceded her in death.

Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Sunday at St. John United Methodist Church with the Rev. Vincent F. Halter officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends form 2 to 3 p.m. Sunday at the church and other times at the home of her daughter, 271 Fat Back Rd., Dalzell.

JUANITA M. ARTHUR

We pause today to pay richly deserved tributes to Juanita "Patty" McKnight Arthur. God, in his infinite wisdom, called her to rest Tuesday, March 16, 2010, at Carolinas Hospital System.

She was born April 24, 1932, in Lee County, to the late Jack Hannah and Queenie Belle McKnight Wilson and was reared by Harry and Gather McKnight. She attended the public schools of Lee County. At an early age, she joined Liberty Hill Baptist Church, where she served humbly until her death. Juanita Arthur was gentle, humble, kind and devoted to her family. She married the late Roosevelt Arthur Sr.

She leaves to cherish her memories: her children, Queenie (Alexander) Boyd, Tommy McKnight, Roosevelt Arthur Jr., Mary L. Arthur, Barbara J. Arthur, Carrie L. Arthur, Christine Arthur and Brenda B. Arthur; special cousin, Janie (Frederick) Jackson, who was reared in the home; her grandchildren, Jamar (Tiffany) Boyd, Latoya W. Boyd, Jarell A. Boyd, Quetta S. Boyd, Tamesha L. McKnight, Jasmine R. Arthur, Roosevelt Arthur III, Krystal N. Goings, Wynter A. Goings and Ayanna Rivers; her great-grandchildren, Jamar Boyd III, Javon Boyd and Zamar A. Harry; her sisters, Ella Mae (James) Murphy, Sarah Wright, Gathers Hannah and Lillie Belle (Buntine) Mingo; her brothers, Harry (Margaret) Wilson, Henry (Judy) Wilson, Harry (Shirley) Hannay, Albert Hannah, Frazier Hannah and Henry Hannah; her brother-in-law, Novel L. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Vernon and Tom Wilson, Eugene, Mingo and Jack Hannah.
Homegoing services for Juanita McKnight Arthur will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Liberty Hill Missionary Baptist Church, Bishopville, with the Rev. Jerome Douglas. Interment will be in Boones Memorial Garden.

Funeral services for Joyce Skinner, age 88, who passed away March 12, will be held Monday at 2:00 pm at the Hebron United Methodist Church in Lee County. Rev. Ryan Riley will officiate. 

Burial will be in the Hebron Cemetery directed by Norton Funeral Home, Bishopville Chapel. Visitation will be Sunday 3-5 pm at the Funeral Home amd at other times at the residence of her niece Ann Grantham, 938 Swamp Fox Drive, Hartsville, S.C. 

Miss Skinner was born in Bishopville a daughter of the late George W. & Alma Andrews Skinner. She was a graduate of Bishopville High School, received a BS Degree in Nursing from the University of South Carolina. She was Navy Veteran of WW II and nursed in several VA Hospitals, and was a member of the Hebron United Methodist Church. 

Surviving are 2 brothers, Dr. H.A. Skinner, Warren Z. Skinner, both of Columbia, Several nieces & nephews, Special Friend, Margaret Girard, Florence. She was preceded in death by 2 brothers, James Thomas Skinner,& John Carol Skinner, and 1 sister, Mary Elizabeth Smith.

Ethel Mae Horton, 65, wife of Jerry Lee Horton, died Thursday, March 4, 2010 at her home.

Born in Lee County, she was a daughter of Willard Baker and the late Carrie Mae Jackson Baker. Mrs. Horton was a member of High Hill True Light Church of Christ. 

Survivors include her husband of Bishopville; her father of Bishopville; her children, Felicia and Larry Gainey of Cassatt, Dawn and Chuck Tutt of Camden, and Chad Horton of Bishopville; nine grandchildren, Hannah Gainey, Megan Gainey, Jacob Gainey, Carrie Tutt, Kaitlin Tutt, Abbigail Tutt, Allyssa Tutt, Dakota Horton, Alexie Horton; a brother, Elvin Baker (Linda) of Bishopville; and three sisters, Denise Marshall (Wade) of Camden, Wanda Kelley (Rex) of Cassatt, and Teresa Marshall (Johnny) of Bethune.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday at High Hill True Light Church of Christ with the Rev. Russell McLeod officiating. Burial will be in the High Hill True Light Church of Christ cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Craig Baker, Chris Baker, Corey Baker, Joshua Marshall, Chad Floyd, and Tony Atkinson.

Alex Lynn Raley, 50, died Thursday, March 4, 2010 from injuries received in a motorcycle accident on I-95 in Jasper County.

Born in Lee County, he was a son of Sylvia Brown Raley and the late Robert L. "June" Raley, Jr. He was employed by Westinghouse in Columbia.

Survivors include his mother of Bishopville; two daughters, Valerie Isaacks (David) of Topeka, KS and Tiffany Raley of Whiteville, NC; a son, Cody Raley of Lugoff; three granddaughters, Madison, Olivia, and Ella Isaaks; two sisters, Dianne Medlin (Zack Anthony) and Shelia Raley both of Bishopville.

A memorial service will be held at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Hancock-Elmore-Hill Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Mark Davis officiating. The family will receive friends in the chapel after the service.

Charles Clyburn Capell, Sr., 67, husband of Judy Stokes Capell died Wednesday, March 3, 2010 at his home.

Born in Lee County, he was a son of Sara Brown Brandt and the late Harry Capell. Mr. Capell was a member of St. Andrew Church of God and was the owner of Capell Auto Parts until his retirement.

Survivors include his wife of Rembert; his mother; four children, Charlene Robinson (Jody) of Lugoff, Julie Davidson (Rod) of Bishopville, Charles Clyburn Capell, Jr. (Michelle) of Rembert, and Kimberly Tilton (Johnny) of Atlanta, GA; two brothers, Lovon Capell and Wayne Capell; 10 grandchildren, Justin, Laken, Amelia, Garrett, Meredith, Laney, Allison, Sara Grace, Kensey, and Lear; and a family friend, Leigh Outlaw.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Donna Jean Grantham.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at St. Andrew Church of God with the Rev. Frank Ramey officiating. Burial will be in the St. Andrew Church of God Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Luke Stokes, Wayne Stokes, Farell "Johnny" Stokes, Lonnie Stokes, Ernie Capell Gladwell, Lavern Grantham, Jr., Travis Brown, and Daniel Melton.
